Dickens of a Christmas 2018!

Highlights from the 35th Annual Dickens of a Christmas!

by Sara Vogt – December 3, 2018

Wellsboro’s 35th annual Dickens of a Christmas is officially in the books! Thousands came to enjoy the day and for many of those visiting this was the first time to step back in time to the Victorian era.

The day presented a few situations which caused this wonderful community of Wellsboro to rise to the occasion! One of them that I will mention here is the loss of power to one side of the Main Street shops for a couple of hours. Julie Van Ness, Executive Director of the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce, could be seen hurrying to Dunham’s Hardware to buy lamps for the merchants to use to light their stores. Also when the power was out a large number of people were left waiting in line to see the Dickens play so Johanna Vogt stepped up and played her violin to help pass the time while the power was being restored. And no power meant that at one of the Dickens plays they used candlelight to light the way. Those attending that performance said the atmosphere made it even more special.

Thankfully, many of the outside festivities like the Fizziwig performers and the Best Dressed Showcase were spared from the forecast of rain seeing that if held off until later that evening.

This year The Best Dressed Showcase registered forty -three participants who presented their Victorian outfits! Judges Teresa Banik Capuzzo, Kathleen Schnell, Jan Stiner, and Sara Vogt had the task of choosing those who would be in the top five to receive the main prizes valuing over $2,000. Our first place winner was Stephen and Allison Schmidt, second -place winner was Richard, Kate and Baby Romana McCoy, third – place winner was Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Mack, fourth- place winner was Linda Brown, and the fifth-place winner was Bud Voorhees. (To view the outfits who won please watch the broadcast.) There were many extra prizes awarded as well.
