Our community gathered for family-friendly (& eco-friendly) fun!
The 7th annual Earth Day event at Mill Cove in Mansfield attracted people of all ages. With bird walks, falconry demonstrations, zip lining, energy exhibits, marshmallow archery, recycling crafts, children’s games, food and local vendors there was something for everyone.
Ever since it’s conception in 1970, Earth Day has been bringing people together from all walks of life to promote awareness and inspire change. It is a day celebrated by over 1 billion people in 193 countries in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world.
Earth Day’s 2018 theme is End Plastic Pollution. It hopes to fundamentally change people’s attitude and behavior towards plastic & reduce pollution. The incredible growth of plastics threatens our planet from poisoning and injuring marine life to disrupting human hormones. It litters beaches, landscapes, streams and clogs our overflowing landfills.
In a large scale effort to promote these Earth Day values everyday, Mill Cove Inc. is facilitating the new Mill Cove Environmental Center. Ground breaking is scheduled for this Fall if all progresses as planned. The building will include a great hall, exhibit area and laboratory facilities for both students and public alike to enjoy.
Smokey the Bear made a welcome appearance to remind children, “Only YOU can prevent forest fires.” He urges people to drown campfires, crush cigarettes and hold matches until cold. His advice is as pertinent today as it was at the first Smokey Bear Campaign 74 years ago.
