Festival Supports Local Agriculture

Welcome to another edition of Agricultural Spotlight!

by Melissa Bravo – July 7, 2017

The recently held Canton Wine and Cheese Festival is today’s focus of Agricultural Spotlight here on Home Page. The festival was held at the Manley Bohlayer Farm located in at 141 East Canton Cross Road, Canton, PA on June 24th. Several Tioga County vendors were on hand, including the newly opened Backroads Creamery, owned by Amanda Kennedy. The creamery is located just outside of Roseville on Kennedy Road right here in Tioga County.

“We had about 1,500 visitors this year at the festival. We are happy with the size of the festival because there is plenty of room for our visitors to find a nice quiet spot under the trees to enjoy the wine food and music, “said Angela Schoonover. “Music this year was provided by Acoustic Pawnshop of Mansfield, a great group who provides a wonderful ambiance in the morning in the front yard of the farmhouse. Matt and Jude Noldy are the talent behind the local group. The two musicians met while Judy was attending Mansfield University say’s their Facebook page. The afternoon music was provided by A-Team a group from Lycoming County. “They had the crowd in the backyard dancing for hours,” said Angela.

With great weather and a farm friendly atmosphere, visitors mingled with friend and family while nibbling on cheese, tasting wine and devouring huge portions of straight from the pit roast beef and locally made baked goods.

Two Local cheese makers, Backhills Creamery of Roseville, Tioga County and LeRaysville Cheese Factory of LeRaysville, Bradford County provided thousands of cheese samplers for the crowd.

“This was our eighth year for this festival,” said Angela. It started small but it has grown to a nice size where people seem to really enjoy themselves and it is a very festive atmosphere. We have 10 wineries that attend every year. That number gives just the right balance for the crowd to mingle about the grounds of the teaching farm.”

According to Angela Schoonover, the festival was started by a group of women who had worked on other festivals and other community projects in Canton and thought that this would be a nice way to bring more people to our town. We are always open to more people joining our committee, especially if they have exciting ideas about what we can add to the festival. The Festival is a joint effort between Rekindle the Spirit Inc. and the Canton Chamber of Commerce.

If you have not visited one of Rekindle the Spirits heritage farm workshops at the Manley Bohlayer Farm in Canton, they are open year round. This is also the location of the annual Apple and Cheese Festival. The 2018 Cheese Festival will take place on June 23, 2018.

Are you a cheese maker? If you are and you’re interested in attending as a vendor next year please contact the committee through their webpage, Facebook page or email at cantonwineandcheese@yahoo.com.
