On the Radar – Buckle Up
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), seat belts are the single most effective safety technology in the history of the automobile. Vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death, with most of those fatalities being attributed to unbelted motorists.
The Click It or Ticket Campaign is a national effort to increase awareness of the importance of wearing your seatbelt. This year’s campaign is currently running from May 14th through June 3rd. Here’s a good statistic to remember: approximately 75% of all crashes occur within 25 miles from home and wearing your seatbelt can reduce your risk of fatal injury by 60%. So that quick trip to the grocery store, school, or grandma’s house is where you will most likely be involved in a crash.
Memorial Day Ceremony 2018
Memorial Day, not to be confused with Veteran’s Day is a U.S. Federal Holiday that is in place to remembering honor those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. The holiday was originally known as “Decoration Day” after the civil war ended in 1868. The Grand Army of the Republic, designated a special day to decorate the graves of the fallen with flowers.
Millions of soldiers have died fighting for our country in battle. Remember to honor and thank those who are serving or who have served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice, not only on Memorial Day, but everyday. Let us never forget. God Bless.
UPMC Susquehanna – Cancer Center
For individuals in our local communities who are going through the atrocity of cancer, there is comfort in knowing that a comprehensive cancer center is available right in Tioga County. UPMC Susquehanna Soldiers + Sailors provides full care for each patient’s situation, as each case varies slightly. A doctor assesses the condition, and then customizes a treatment plan with the patient.
Joseph Kaplan, MD is one such doctor in the cancer center at Soldiers + Sailors. Dr. Kaplan originally became enthralled with medicine after a personal incident as a child. His father took him to the doctor to check on swelling in his groin, with the fear that it may be a hernia. The doctor proceeded to check his feet, and saw that the condition was connected to an infected blood blister on his big toe. Treating the infection caused the swelling to go away, and young Kaplan was hooked on the intricacies and wonder of medicine!
Movin’ Together 2018 – Rail Trail Adventure

This year with Linda we spent our time at the new Cavanaugh Access to the trail. When asked how she felt about this new access she stated, “It is new and wonderful, and it is inviting. This whole section of the trail is 8.7 miles long, and this particular access is at mile four. Why not go, it is just the perfect place if you want a short walk, if you want a short bike, it is the perfect place if you want to learn about the trail.”
