The Youngest Entrepreneurs

Welcome to the Children’s Business Fair!

by Lauren Gooch – August 17, 2018

Some of Wellsboro’s youngest entrepreneurs gathered on the Green on Thursday, August 16th for the first annual Children’s Business Fair!

Rachel Smith, the founder of the Wellsboro Young Entrepreneurs Children’s Business Fair, originally thought of the idea after seeing a group in Texas encouraging others to start their own community event for young entrepreneurs. After sending in an application video, they were selected! This event is a great way for the community to come out and support the next generation of business leaders.

Kids of all ages have been working hard all summer to develop and create their own micro-business to show off their entrepreneurship skills. Charm bracelets, bird seed ornaments, pet rocks, slime, caricatures, wooden toilet paper holders, baked goods, ice cream, antique bottles, handmade clay jewelry, greeting cards, and solar oven treats are just some of the creative products that these kids crafted.

These innovative items were sold to raise money for various local charities, such as the animal shelter, the Samaritan house, homeless shelters, and children with cancer.

“Every single kid was super excited about donating their profits,” Smith said. “None of them even asked if they could keep the profits. They were so excited to find a local charity.”

At a young age, the children are learning and growing in so many practical ways. Not only do they learn skills in responsibility, finance, advertising, marketing, sales, and working with the public, but they also have the opportunity to make and sell products that they are passionate about. It also gives families the chance to spend time together and make the products.

We would especially like to thank Citizens and Northern Bank for sponsoring this event and providing the t-shirts and pizza for the children to enjoy.

For more information or to join in on the fun for next year’s event, contact Rachel Smith at rachelwellsboro27@gmail.com. There is no cost to join, so we encourage children of all ages to come out and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity next year!
