Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the 7th inning, the North Penn-Mansfield Tigers rallied for a 5-4 win over the Towanda Black Knights in NTL Large School Division baseball action on Wednesday, April 11.

The Black Knights broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third for an early lead. After Dawsan Manning struck out to lead off the inning, Lars Thomason singled between first and second base. A walk by Tanner Kunkle and infield hit by Luke Tama loaded the bases for Ryan Bartholomew, who hit a sac fly to right field to bring Thomason home.

It took the Tigers until the bottom of the 4th to tie the game back up.

Justin Kriner led off the inning by reaching on an error then had Gage Martin pinch run for him. As Martin began to steal second base, Logan Garverick struck out on a dropped third strike during the next at bat, but that allowed Martin to advance to third. Martin scored the next at bat as Noah Spencer hit a sac fly to center, tying it at 1-1.

The game remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the 7th when the Black Knights scored three go-ahead runs. Towanda led off with four straight singles by Devin Dunn, Bartholomew, Thomason, and Kunkle. A Thomason single to right field scored Dunn and Bartholomew then Kunkle’s single to right scored Thomason to put the Black Knights up 4-1.

That’s when the Tigers dug deep and started swinging the bats.

North Penn-Mansfield started the inning on back-to-back walks by Spencer and Alex Stein. Bryan Bogaczyk then reached on an error but scored Spencer to cut the lead to 4-2. Dylan Wesneski was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, which Kipp Hillson took advantage of with a single to shallow left to score Stein, making it 4-3.

The Tigers tied it at 4-4 as Dylan Williamson drew a walk during the next at bat. With the bases still loaded, Dewey Wise stepped in the batter’s box. Wise hit a dribbler down the third base line that managed to stay in fair territory. As the throw went to first, which Wise beat out, Wesneski scored the Tigers’ winning run.

“That was a great game. We fought back. We were down. We tied it up at 1-1 with small ball,” said head coach Matt Perry. “We moved guys from base to base then at the top of the 7th they score 3 to make it 4-1 and our guys didn’t quit. They had battle left in them. We get 7, 8, and 9 on the bases and the top of the order was able to move guys around. Awesome job, I’m really excited for these guys.”

Williamson went 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 doubles and Hillson also went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Stein got the win in relief after Spencer started and went the first 5 innings, striking out 4.

The win improves the Tigers’ record to 3-2 overall (3-1 in the NTL Large School Division). The Tigers are back in action this Friday as the host Troy.
